The Easter Hare

In 1890 Katharine Hillard examined the Ancient Mythology of the Hare, or Bunny, as it relates to the teaching of theosophy, and its ties to the most sacred Christian festival, Easter. Her article was published in The Atlantic Monthly, a highly popular magazine at that time. This article is reprinted from the Archives of Edmonton Theosophical Society.
In the same issue Ron Westman wrote “Rabbit on the Moon – A short History of Easter” related to Hillard’s article, in which he claimed: “It reveals that Easter and its customs have ancient and nearly universal origins, roots which were concerned with the most basic aspects of life. Our friend the Easter Hare (or Bunny . . .) and his cart of eggs are borne of those roots.”
