Nahanni National Park, NWT
Twice
the height of Niagara Falls, Virginia Falls is situated on the South
Nahanni River which has its origins in the Mackenzie Mountains and empties
into the Liard River, which in turn flows into the Mackenzie River.
These Falls are divided by a towering spire of rock which, according
to legend, is the spirit of the Naha Indians who once lived in the area.
The Naha were a legendary Indian tribe of mountain warriors who mysteriously
vanished but are believed to have relocated south. The language of the
Navajo of southern United States has a similar dialect to the Dene who
now occupy this area of Canada.
The word Nahanni is derived from an Athapaskan language and means "people
of the west".
