Comments on Letters of HPB, Vol. I

Fohat has received much material concerning The Letters of H.P. Blavatsky. This correspondence has come by way of e-mails and consequently is replete with the flaws of that medium. Please excuse the typos and more personal nature of the arguments to follow and be fair to the writers in grappling with the principles that we are trying to identify. Theosophists do not engage in this kind of exercise nearly enough as there seems to be a hidden assumption that it is not brotherly. I would argue that the brotherhood comes about by not taking arguments against your position personally and responding with the motive of seeking Truth. It may help if you perceive those taking the opposite side to your own views as playing "devil's advocate".

What follows is basically a chronological set of links to the debate on The Letters of H.P. Blavatsky, Volume I. As the debate is self explanatory, I would only caution readers to not make assumptions about the participant's positions until you read the whole thing. Sometimes, early in a debate when positions are still being established, one party can hastily write something about the other party's position thereby unintentionally coloring the mind of a third-party reader.

If theosophy and the Theosophical Societies are going to be revitalized, these types of debates are going to have to be conducted. There has been over a century of creating the theosophical box or head-space which we all now find ourselves immersed in. It is time to think outside the box and grow individually and as Theosophical Societies. We should all be making our voices heard, exploding old and tired myths and recreating ourselves. If there is to be a phoenix arising from the ashes of the old Theosohical Society, then it is up to each of us to do our part.
